In 2006, Ya-Ting worked with a human rights organization in Gujarat, India to curb the discriminatory practice of manual scavenging which disproportionately affects women. She shared her experience with close friends Ali and Leah, and together they explored the possibility of an idea actualized: combining design and community development as an instrument of change. In 2007, Shakti was proudly launched.
